“Girls in ICT Day 2026” in Ulaanbaatar

2026.04.23

The Communications Regulatory Commission of Mongolia, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Representative Office in Mongolia, successfully hosted the “Girls in ICT Day 2026” event today at the Grand Ballroom of Novotel Hotel.

The event was designed to enhance female students’ understanding of the information and communication technology (ICT) sector and to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect their rights and ensure their safety in the digital environment.

The event was attended by over 100 middle school students from general education schools in Ulaanbaatar. Participants engaged in open discussions with guest speakers on the importance of girls’ and women’s participation in the ICT sector, as well as the wide range of career opportunities available in this field. The discussions also emphasized the role of young people not merely as end-users of artificial intelligence (AI), but as its architects and innovators, contributing to the development of an inclusive, responsible, and sustainable digital society.

The event further addressed digital literacy, awareness of online rights, and safe online practices relevant to young learners. Through team-based creative activities, participants developed practical competencies in the safe and responsible use of AI and demonstrated innovative problem-solving skills in addressing challenges.

“Girls in ICT Day,” an initiative led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) since 2011 and observed annually in April, serves as a global platform to inspire girls and young women to pursue studies and careers in ICT. The 2026 edition is being commemorated worldwide under the theme: “Artificial Intelligence for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future.”

According to research, women represent over 30% of the workforce in leading ICT companies in Mongolia; however, fewer than 10% are employed in technical ICT roles. This highlights the importance of promoting ICT opportunities for girls and strengthening their capacity to participate in the sector.
